As of January 2025, 167 women have filed sexual abuse lawsuits against Dr. Barry Brock, a former OB/GYN affiliated with Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and other Los Angeles-area institutions. These lawsuits also name Cedars-Sinai as a defendant, accusing the hospital of a “decades-long cover-up” that enabled Brock to sexually abuse and exploit patients seeking medical care.
Survivors have reported a pattern of misconduct by Dr. Brock, including performing invasive pelvic and breast exams without gloves, conducting unnecessary and rough examinations, making lewd and sexually explicit comments, and examining patients without the presence of a chaperone or providing a gown. The accusations extend beyond adult women—infants were allegedly harmed as well. In the hospital’s NICU, nurses reportedly referred to injured newborns as “Brock Babies,” and dubbed him “Brock the Butcherer” due to his history of traumatic deliveries.
Patients allege that Dr. Brock insisted on vaginal deliveries for his own sexual gratification, which often resulted in severe bleeding and maternal injuries. Newborns were reportedly left with cracked skulls. He was also accused of conducting post-childbirth procedures without consent, which some lawsuits described as “female genital mutilation.”
Dr. Barry Brock began his medical career at Cedars-Sinai in the 1970s. Complaints about his behavior began surfacing in the early 2000s and continued for decades. Despite this, Cedars-Sinai allegedly continued to renew his medical privileges, allowing the abuse to persist. In August 2024, the hospital suspended his privileges and launched an internal investigation. Weeks later, his employment was formally terminated based on the evidence collected.
The first major lawsuit against Dr. Brock was filed in October 2024 by more than 60 women. In January 2025, an additional 107 women filed another large-scale lawsuit, bringing the total number of plaintiffs to at least 167. The lawsuits accuse Brock and Cedars-Sinai of negligence, sexual battery, and enabling abuse under the pretense of medical care.
Under California law, survivors of sexual abuse by a physician are allowed to file civil lawsuits for sexual battery, even if they never reported the abuse to authorities or disclosed it previously. With this legal avenue open, the litigation is expected to continue growing as more women come forward with allegations.
The lawsuits mark one of the largest sexual abuse cases involving a medical professional in California, with claims stretching back decades and involving both adult patients and newborns under Dr. Brock’s care.
