Former Cedars-Sinai OB-GYN surrenders license after sexual abuse complaints

Former Cedars-Sinai obstetrician-gynecologist Barry J. Brock, 75, has permanently surrendered his California medical license after an accusation of negligent care by the Medical Board of California. Brock, who had practiced since 1978, signed an agreement last month to relinquish his license rather than face a hearing. His attorney, Tracy Green, stated that Brock did not admit to the allegations but chose to surrender to avoid investing additional time and money. Under the agreement, he is barred from legally practicing medicine in California for life. Brock retired from medicine in August. Since his retirement, at least 176 women have filed lawsuits against him, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, and other facilities where he worked, alleging that the institutions knowingly concealed his sexual misconduct. The claims accuse Brock of medically unjustifiable procedures that caused lasting physical harm. Brock has denied all accusations of impropriety. Brock was part of the Cedars-Sinai physician network until 2018 and held clinical privileges at the hospital until mid-2024. Cedars-Sinai confirmed in July that it suspended his privileges after receiving “concerning complaints” from former patients, which were later terminated. The medical center said Brock’s alleged behavior was contrary to its core values and reaffirmed its commitment to patient trust and its healing mission. The complaint that led to Brock’s license surrender involved a patient treated in 2018 for a blighted ovum, a type of miscarriage in which the fertilized egg fails to develop into an embryo. According to the complaint, during a dilation and curettage procedure, Brock instructed the patient to undress in front of him, did not wear gloves, and conducted the procedure without a chaperone. The patient experienced severe pain and prolonged bleeding, and later discovered the procedure had been incomplete, requiring a second one to remove remaining tissue. The complaint also alleged that Brock failed to provide adequate pain medication, did not complete the procedure properly, and neglected follow-up care. Although surrendering his license resolves the board’s accusation, Brock continues to face extensive civil litigation. Last year, 167 women filed suits, and nine additional women have since come forward, alleging he groped their breasts and genitals during examinations and made inappropriate sexual comments. Attorney Lisa Esser, who represents nine plaintiffs, said the civil actions ensure accountability, emphasizing that Brock cannot escape responsibility. With the surrender of his license, Brock’s medical career officially ends, but legal challenges surrounding decades of alleged misconduct continue to unfold in civil court.
