Former UCLA gynecologist James Heaps pleaded guilty to 13 felony counts involving the sexual abuse of five former patients, ending the need for a retrial after his 2022 conviction was overturned on appeal. The 69-year-old was resentenced to 11 years in prison and received credit for time already served. Upon his release, he will be required to register as a sex offender for life.
The guilty plea was welcomed by survivors, many of whom said they had spent years seeking accountability for the abuse they experienced during medical examinations. Victim Nicole Gumpert described the admission of guilt as a meaningful milestone after nearly eight years of pursuing justice, emphasizing that survivors refused to remain silent despite the emotional toll.
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said the plea spared victims from having to relive their experiences during another lengthy trial while ensuring Heaps accepted responsibility for the crimes prosecutors were prepared to prove.
The criminal case is part of one of the largest sexual abuse scandals involving the University of California. Heaps worked as a gynecologist and oncologist at UCLA for 35 years before retiring in 2018 amid misconduct allegations. The University of California has since agreed to pay approximately $700 million to settle civil claims involving more than 5,500 eligible former patients. Civil litigation against Heaps is expected to continue.
