Former UCLA gynecologist James Heaps pleaded guilty to 13 felony charges involving five victims, bringing a major sexual abuse case closer to its conclusion after his previous conviction was overturned earlier this year. The 69-year-old was resentenced to 11 years in prison—the same sentence he received in 2023—and will continue serving his term.
Heaps' original conviction was vacated after an appeals court ruled he had not received a fair trial. The court found that the trial judge failed to disclose a note from the jury foreperson expressing concerns about another juror’s English proficiency, preventing the defense from addressing a critical issue during deliberations. The appellate court determined the error warranted a new trial.
Rather than proceed with another trial, Heaps admitted guilt to 13 felony counts involving five patients. Several victims attended the resentencing hearing and delivered emotional impact statements, saying the guilty plea provided long-awaited accountability after years of pursuing justice.
Heaps has been accused of sexually abusing hundreds of women during his 35-year career at UCLA. More than 300 former patients have filed lawsuits against the university, which has paid nearly $700 million to settle claims related to his alleged misconduct—the largest sexual abuse settlement involving a public university. Allegations first surfaced publicly in 2017 and 2018, leading UCLA to investigate and ultimately end Heaps' employment.
