Former UCLA gynecologist James Heaps, 70, pleaded guilty to 13 felony charges involving the sexual abuse of five patients during medical examinations, bringing years of criminal proceedings closer to a conclusion. He was sentenced to 11 years in state prison and must register as a sex offender for life.
The plea followed the California Court of Appeal's decision to overturn Heaps’ 2022 conviction due to a constitutional error involving juror communications that were not disclosed to the defense. Rather than face a retrial and the possibility of additional charges and a longer sentence, Heaps admitted guilt for offenses involving five women, including the two victims from his original conviction and three whose cases previously ended in a hung jury.
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said the guilty plea holds Heaps accountable for abusing the trust placed in him as a physician. Victims also addressed the court, with one describing his legacy as one of shame and betrayal.
The case has had widespread legal and financial consequences. More than 500 lawsuits accused UCLA of failing to protect patients despite prior complaints of misconduct. The university ultimately paid over $700 million to settle those claims while acknowledging that the alleged conduct was reprehensible. Heaps, who practiced for more than 35 years and treated over 6,000 patients, remains incarcerated and is expected to become eligible for parole in 2028.
