James Heaps Sentenced to 11 Years; McGrath Kavinoky Expands Barry Brock Litigation

Former UCLA obstetrician-gynecologist James Heaps has been sentenced to 11 years in state prison after pleading guilty to 13 felony counts of sexual assault involving five former patients. Heaps must also register as a lifetime sex offender. The criminal sentencing follows years of legal proceedings stemming from allegations that he abused patients during medical examinations.

McGrath Kavinoky LLP represented 312 survivors in the related civil litigation against Heaps and the University of California, helping secure a $375 million settlement. Jennifer McGrath, the firm's lead counsel in the case, said the sentence reflects accountability made possible by survivors who came forward despite significant challenges.

Following the conclusion of the Heaps case, McGrath Kavinoky LLP is focusing on litigation involving former Cedars-Sinai obstetrician-gynecologist Barry J. Brock. More than 500 former patients have accused Brock of sexual misconduct during medical examinations spanning decades. Brock surrendered his California medical license in 2025 after Cedars-Sinai revoked his hospital privileges in 2024. He has denied the allegations.

The firm currently represents more than 100 women pursuing claims against Brock and Cedars-Sinai. According to partner Darren Kavinoky, the allegations reflect a recurring pattern in which trusted physicians are accused of misconduct while institutions allegedly failed to act on patient complaints. The firm encourages additional survivors to seek legal guidance regarding their rights under California law.
